Biography
Vibrant, expressive, captivating!
“Although all three showed their own distinctive personalities, their vividly wide-awake ensemble playing made for an electrifying interpretation that commanded the audience’s attention for every single second.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
The Amelio Trio was established in 2012 by violinist Johanna Schubert, cellist Merle Geißler, and pianist Philipp Kirchner. The trio was formed upon the recommendation of their music teachers in order to participate in the German youth competition Jugend musiziert. At that time, all members were only 13 years old. Today, they have been playing together for over half their lives, nurturing a profound and shared musical understanding. This connection is evident in their performances, captivating audiences with their seamless interplay, stylistic versatility, boundless curiosity, and distinctive musical energy.
Following prizes at major competitions such as second prize at the prestigious ARD Music Competition 2023 in Munich, the Grand Prize of the German Music Competition 2024, and first prize at the International Schumann Chamber Music Prize Frankfurt 2022, the ensemble embarked on an international career.
Concert tours have taken them throughout Germany and other European countries, as well as to renowned venues such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Prinzregententheater Munich, the Laeiszhalle Hamburg and festivals such as the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele and the Piano Trio Fest Bern. In addition to classical-romantic repertoire, the Amelio Trio passionately presents contemporary music in its programs. The three musicians are constantly searching for diverse expressive possibilities for their ensemble and their very personal approach to the works.
Their debut CD, featuring works by Ives, Beethoven, Mamlok, Brahms and a commissioned piece by composer Birke Bertelsmeier, will be released in September 2025 on the GENUIN label in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
The ensemble members are generously supported by scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the Cusanuswerk. Johanna and Merle play on fine instruments by Lorenzo Storioni (Cremona 1779) and Georges Chanot (Paris circa 1840) from the Deutsche Musikinstrumentenfonds.
After many years under the tutelage of Angelika Merkle, the trio has been under the artistic guidance of Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet) and Stefan Heinemeyer (ATOS Trio) at HMTM Hannover since 2019. Furthermore, they have received important artistic inputs from musicians including Eberhard Feltz, Steven Isserlis and the Fauré Quartet.
The Amelio Trio is ensemble in residence at ProQuartet – Centre Européen de Musique de Chambre in Paris for the 2024-2025 season.
