with Beethoven’s Piano Concertos
For the first time, the exceptional pianist Sunwook Kim will lead the Chamber Orchestra of Europe as a piano soloist. Together, Sunwook Kim and the COE will present all of Beethoven’s piano concertos on a tour that will travel throughout Europe and South Korea in Spring 2025. With a total of twelve concerts, highlights will include the Berlin Philharmonic on 24th of March 2025, Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt on 29th and 30th of March 2025, and two concerts in England – on 11th of April 2025 in Saffron Walden, Essex, and in the Barbican Centre in London on 12th of April 2025.
The tour begins on 22 March 2025 in the Salle Philharmonique in Liège, followed by a concert in the Berlin Philharmonie on 24 March 2025. Beethoven’s Third and Fourth Piano Concertos are on the programme in the Philharmonie’s Chamber Music Hall, complemented by works by contemporary composers such as Anna Clyne’s ‘Stride’ and Helen Grimes’ “Elegiac inflections”.
On 26 March 2025, Sunwook Kim and the COE will perform at the Halle aux Grains in Toulouse, before presenting all five Beethoven piano concertos over two evenings on 29 and 30 March 2025 at Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt – the COE’s home as resident orchestra. Other highlights of the tour include the concerts on 11 April 2025 at Saffron Walden and the crowning finale on 12 April 2025 at the Barbican Centre in London.
Sunwook Kim, who won the Clara Haskil Competition in 2005 and was the first Asian to win the Leeds International Piano Competition a year later, is recognised as one of the most subtle pianists of his generation thanks to his profound interpretations. He is looking forward to working with the COE, which is recognised as one of the best chamber orchestras in the world: “The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is without a doubt one of the finest ensembles. It is a group admired and sought after by many wonderful Maestros, and the history and sound they have created continue to shine, maintaining their excellence to this day. I feel incredibly honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to perform my most beloved Beethoven piano concertos with these wonderful musicians. I eagerly look forward to this tour, hoping it will create joyful memories for both myself and the orchestra, and I cannot wait for the day to arrive.”
