CD release: Holger Falk sings Georges Auric « Mélodies et Chansons »
Holger Falk and Steffen Schleiermacher present their eighth album “Georges Auric – Mélodies et Chansons” in the ‘Groupe des Six’ anthology series (release Oct 25, MDG Records).
Auric composed the music for over 250 films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (starring Anthony Quinn and Gina Lollobrigida), The Wages of Fear and Moulin Rouge. This album includes such popular classics as Moulin des amours once lip-synched by Zsa Zsa Gabor. Three chansons from the dazzling musical comedy Á nous, la liberté! (Freedom Forever) directed by René Clair show Auric’s creative instinct for captivating melodies.
From bourgeois and provocative in Huit Poèmes de Jean Cocteau to romantic and tender in Cinq Poèmes de Gerard de Nerval and lute-like Renaissance sounds in Printemps based on a poem by the 16th century “prince of poets” – Auric’s stylistic versatility seems almost inexhaustible. “Falk is able to characterize every word so vividly that, if he were singing in Vedic Sanskrit, you’d get the message” reported the Washington Post. His incredibly agile baritone and tremendous tonal range accompanied by Steffen Schleiermacher’s sensitivity, verve and virtuosity on the piano yet again take the benchmark up a notch in art song inépuisable.
